About Kurji Holy Family Hospital
Kurji Holy Family Hospital is the oldest mission hospital in Patna, founded by the Medical Mission Sisters, a Catholic congregation started by Dr. Anna Dengel. Its story began in December 1939 inside the old cathedral at Padri Ki Haveli in Patna City. As patient numbers grew, a larger hospital was built at Kurji on the banks of the Ganga, next to Sadaquat Ashram, and it was formally inaugurated on 19 November 1958 by Dr. Zakir Hussain, then Governor of Bihar. Mother Teresa received basic medical training at the hospital in 1948 before founding the Missionaries of Charity. Since 2000 it has been run jointly with the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, along with the Jesuits of Patna. Today it is a 300-bed multi-specialty hospital with departments of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, cardiology, urology, dermatology, neurology and plastic surgery. It has ICU care with ventilator support, a round-the-clock casualty service and a naturopathy department running since 1980. The hospital is on Danapur Road, convenient for Kurji, Digha and west Patna.
